The Value Creation Opportunity

The Kainos team recognized that retailers drive disproportionate growth in their spice and ingredient aisles by increasing their private label offering. As a result, retailers benefit from partnering with low-cost manufacturing providers that can offer product innovation, as consumers continue to seek enhanced and diversified flavor experiences. The Kainos team maintained a close relationship with Jeff Shumway, the Company’s CEO, since meeting in early 2014.  When Jeff decided to sell the business four years later, he sought a partner who could help him strategically expand Olde Thompson. He chose Kainos in 2018. Olde Thompson represents a strong platform upon which Jeff and Kainos are building a national spices and seasonings supplier that provides category leadership and complete solutions for its customers’ private label programs.

Change Capital At Work

Together with Jeff Shumway, we helped recruit a best-in-class management team with key hires including an SVP of Operations, CFO, EVP of Sales, and Director of Procurement. Alongside the Olde Thompson team, the Kainos Operations Team led several initiatives that helped drive substantial improvement in manufacturing and supply chain processes. At the time the investment, Kainos identified an opportunity to invest in sales capabilities and production capacity that led substantial sales growth and customer diversification during our investment. Finally, through the acquisition of Gel Spice from the Engel family in 2020, we created a bi-coastal platform with redundant supply and a broader product portfolio and customer base.

Our Change Capital initiatives were accomplished in just three years after nearly tripling the business.
